need info on TYPE 1 (not 2) Posted Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at 6:13 PM My fiancee's son is a type 1 diabetic and they are both under the assumption that some animal protein (fish, chicken) in his diet is more optimal than a completely vegan (carbohydrate-centric) diet. His son (20 yrs old) knows well enough about how bad cow's milk is (not even from a cruelty point-of-view, which they tend to shield him from knowing fully about animal cruelty). Since this is a sensitive issue I feel I have no right to push veganism on his son and it creates a dilemma for me as I would like a completely vegan home when I am married. Is it a convenient myth that those with Type 1 diabetes must have some animal protein? |

RE: need info on TYPE 1 (not 2) Posted Monday, March 8, 2010 at 12:23 PM I'm not a dietitian, but I believe the reasoning for animal protein is to blunt the glucose-response when eating carbohydrates. As long as a vegan chooses low glycemic foods, alone or in combination with high glycemic foods, the glucose will be controlled. The biggest culprits of highly glycemic foods are anything corn based (esp. corn syrup), white breads/pasta/rice. Denise Bockwoldt, RN, MS, BC-ADM |

RE: need info on TYPE 1 (not 2) Posted Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 9:17 AM It is my understanding the no animal protein is required in the diet of any diabetic, type 1 or 2. While a vegan diet wil not reverse type 1, I think Dr. Barnard is studying the effects of the diet on improving glucose control. I'll check and get back with you. Go Vegan! Stay Vegan! |
