RE: Vitamin D Deficiency...

Hi Bo,
I've had Vitamin D deficiency off and on for about a year. It sounds like your doctor is doing the best treatment he/she can, medically. The best thing you can do for yourself is get more sunlight, especially between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm. Jack Norris, RD, has some excellent information on Vitamin D and bone health: Vegan Health

Vitamin D Deficiency...

Hello all, last year at my annual physical I had a B12 deficiency.. that is all taken care of now.. in this years physical I have a Vitamin D (25-Hydroxy) deficiency.. the result was 7.4L with 32.0L being the lower limits.

Has anyone else had this situation and how was it resolved? My doctor is prescribing 5k units of D once a week, with 2k units daily. Can this be right? Are there not other supplements or minerals needed for good absorption?

TIA for your thoughts...

Blood type and diet

Hi, I haven't been on here for a loong while, but I have a question:
Recently I convinced a friend to try the 21 day kick start as she was told she's borderline diabetic. After she started the kick start she saw a dietitian who told her that because she has blood type O+ she NEEDS to have meat. I thought this was very interesting because I have the same blood type and was also told that by a health food store employee.
Im wondering if our groups dietitians or Dr. Barnard could comment on this so I can pass it on to her.

I love the quote from Dr Fuhrman about the labels. Excellent advice! I use another one for myself, it's the six ingredient rule. Six or less ingredients is usually ok, provided they are wholesome ingredients. I find anything past six and you start to see more of those hard to pronounce types of words. Just sayin'. peace Joe

RE: I Fell Off The Wagon

Like the shoes say, Richard, just do it! Some people are successful going "cold tofu" and making many big lifestyle changes at once; others need to ease into things. I don't think one is better than the other, as long as you get there eventually!

Sit down and make yourself a plan. Decide on one change every 3 or 4 weeks, or whatever schedule you feel comfortable with. Maybe start with increasing the fruits and vegetables in your diet; most people find that by doing that they naturally decrease the amount of the less healthy choices (meat, dairy). Then maybe give up the meat; you're only eating it every 3 or 4 days, right? After that, tackle the dairy. These are just suggestions; do whatever you feel comfortable with.

Best of luck!

Dr. Mary Sue

RE: I Fell Off The Wagon

I can't stay on diets. All the measuring and record keeping only last about two months. It's the same with testing for blood glucose levels. About three or four months ago, I started testing my glucose only in the morning upon awakening and just before I retire. I changed my diet by having a small breakfast and one healthy meal during the day. I eat other stuff during the day, but I limit the size of portions. I'm not a big meat eater, but I do eat meat and seafood once about every three or four days. I drink milk, two glasses a day. I never eat condiments like salad dressings and I never cook with oil. I have lost 29 pounds and my glucose has gone down 40-60 points. I would like to go more vegan because back in 1998, I was almost vegan and my blood glucose was in the normal range. Any suggestions for making small incremental changes in my lifestyle?

RE: One Key to Success - Measure daily

I followed Dr Neal Barnard and doctor John MacDougall's programs for lowfat vegan foods. This works but you have to measure your food and plan ahead. You also have to incorporate daily exercise. Your doctor probably encouraged you to exercise, treat this with as much importance as you do measuring your blood sugar level on at a minimum of once daily.

If possible, go to diabetes education classes and support groups. These help you develop an awareness of other tools and behaviors that help you stay healthy. The other benefit is that interfacing with other diabetics helps make acceptance of your condition easier. You're not in this alone.

I hope that you'll feel free to reach out to myself and others on this support list, we're all in it together:)
